Maison SiLab caters to a stylish, inclusive, and multi-generational clientele who value creativity, uniqueness, and sustainability in fashion. Grounded in the ethos of 'buying less to buy better,' our customers prioritize quality craftsmanship and distinctive design in their wardrobe selections.
What materials does Maison SiLab use in its creations?
Maison SiLab utilizes recycled, up-cycled, fair trade, and dead stock fabrics in its creations. Additionally, recycled plastic, glass, or wooden beads are incorporated for ornaments, and vegan leather is strictly adhered to in all products.
What is the ethos promoted by Maison SiLab?
Central to Maison SiLab's message is the ethos of 'buy less, buy better,' encouraging clients to repurpose their wardrobe rather than contribute to the landfill crisis.
What is your production process?
We carefully select up-cycled garments from various second-hand clothing suppliers to create our Maison SiLab jackets. Our hand-made embroideries are crafted by four groups of hill tribe women from the mountains of Northern Thailand. The time taken to embroider each jacket ranges from 3 to 8 weeks, depending on the intricacy of the design and the techniques utilized.
What is the story behind your hill tribe textile?
At Maison SiLab, our hill tribe textiles are steeped in heritage and craftsmanship, reflecting the intricate traditions of diverse tribes across South East Asia. We collaborate with passionate groups of women who search the mountains of Northern Thailand and beyond for discarded garments, some over 50 years old. Our aim is to revive these treasures in contemporary wearable forms, each piece being a unique, one-of-a-kind creation. Additionally, we honor the tribes' silverwork expertise by incorporating it into our designs, celebrating their cultural heritage.
The main hill tribes we work with are the: Akha, Hani, Hmong, Karen, Lahu, Lisu, Long Neck (Kayan), Iu Mien, Palong (Dara-ang), Wenshan
How sustainable are your new garments?
We only work with recycled fabrics and 100% fair trade cottons. Our kimonos for example use Lyocell which is made from wood and is biodegradable and compostable. Our bags and pouches are made of recycled plastic bottles.
How often do you launch new products?
We defy the fast-paced norms of the fashion industry, choosing instead to synchronize with the pace of our embroiderers, embracing the essence of slow fashion. What does your brand name mean?
SiLab holds a special significance as it is an anagram of Basil, the cherished stepson of our founder. Basil, a promising individual who was instrumental in the early visions of this business, tragically passed away in 2020 at the young age of 23. The inclusion of the establishing line 'BF 1996' in our logo is a heartfelt tribute to Basil's birth year, ensuring that his memory and impact endure through the essence of our brand.
